The ROGER MOORE Thread

It’s Sir Roger’s birthday and I probably gonna watch “The Spy Who Loved Me” if only to clear my mind and watch something fun.

A very good choice.

What I liked about that trailer is how it presented one unified whole that rhymed with itself despite the change in actors. The general DNA of what made you a fan in the first place remained. But if Roger failed I think Bond would’ve been remembered even more than it is now as a 1960s heyday that limped on longer than it should’ve. Roger’s run was vital in making James Bond a franchise.

Can anyone or anything be respected anymoore?

He doesn’t. Remotely. Fleming’s idea of Bond? Timothy Dalton, but without the ‘nor-vern’ accent. And Roger - Sir. Roger Moore? My favourite 007 of them all. Why? - He hated guns, violence of any kind and was never convincing as a government killer. So what? He was Bond when I grew up* in the Seventies - which I adored anyway, he was the quintessential English Gentleman Adventurer Abroad, in the mold of his dear friend David Niven and his films remain hugely entertaining, with gadgets, exotic locations, humour and he never took it all seriously enough to ruin the fun! I miss him dearly and hope he is at Peace.

*Like **** did I grow up, never even tried…

I’d like to check out the From Roger With Love documentary at some point. The trailer includes Pierce Brosnan as part of the cast giving their thoughts on the man. I like all the Bonds for different reasons, but nobody will reach the status of Sean and Roger IMO. The two titans.

And on the same day an article about Bond‘s grooming - Bond articles now being a staple of the holiday season warm-up - is illustrated by a pic of Roger Moore shaving. Iconic indeed.

I’m looking forward to this eventually turning up on streaming, but I really hope the whole thing isn’t filled with that impression of Roger’s voice. It’s really annoying and frankly not that good. I guess it’s amusing when you can see Coogan doing it, but it seems inappropriate for this sort of project.

From the Esquire article:

Director Jack Cocker also employees a storytelling device that is likely to make Moore’s tale especially memorable – first person narration via an uncanny soundalike.

“Uncanny”?? As in “amazingly close to the real thing”? I may have an issue with that descriptor. But wait, here’s a clarification from the Merriam-Webster site:

…the Oxford English Dictionary reports that the word is used in negative constructions to describe what is not safe to be involved with, or more broadly, what is not in accordance with what is right or natural.

Okay, in that case I’ll let it slide.

Hi guys, don’t forget to watch the Roger Moore docu this evening on BBC2 this evening at 21.00 in GB and at 22.00 in Europe (Netherlands, Germany etc.).

And? Have you all watched it? I really enjoyed it, but it was still a bit disappointing, I expected more unique recordings, given the staple with VHS tapes that his son showed, there must have been a lot more on it than those few pieces we saw. Perhaps the rest was too personal, one of his sons was already visibly struggling to watch the footage shown without tears, so that must always be respected, of course!
Nevertheless, I enjoyed it very much, although the fake Roger voice was not necessary for me, because you heard almost immediately that it was not his real voice, but someone who tried to imitate him just a little too much. It would have been just as good if one of his sons had recorded it, or someone famous who knew him like Walken.

The whole thing’s on YouTube now if anyone’s interested. At least I assume it won’t have been yanked by the time you follow the link.

I thought it was fairly fun. Any chance to see a bit more Roger is a good thing, in my book.
