Who do you want for Bond 7?

I really don’t like the idea of a redhead but that could change as my attitudes have in the past. I have tended to be too traditional on Bond and really wanted/want things to be close to the books. But I have come to eat my words. Here are some confessions:

  1. I hated the idea of a woman being cast as M because I always felt that there was an almost fatherly relationship between M and Bond that was essential. But then I actually saw Goldeneye and thought Judi Dench was amazing and loved the relationship that developed with two Bonds. In some ways my favourite M.
  2. When Craig was first cast, I was a little resistant as I did not want a blond Bond (though there were times when Moore was bordering on that). I was never hard core about this but really wanted to see the guy in the books. Once I heard the direction they were taking with Craig, I was totally sold even before I saw the movie.
  3. Most embarassingly, when rumours first emerged of a future Bond being of African descent, I was opposed because I really thought Bond’s background mattered and we did not need to bring the issue of race into it. I could easily embrace a new Mission Impossible and endless other movies led by an actor of African descent but I wasn’t ready for Bond. But others correctly pointed out to me that the race issue did not have to be central or even brought up (as I understand it was done in the early seasons of Bridgerton (I haven’t seen it)). After some reflection, I realized this really was a non-issue and would not interfere with staying true to the books (they already ignore some of Fleming’s unsavoury views). If Idris Elba had ever gotten the role, I think I would have loved him. This is my most embarassing one as I worked on racism and discrimination a lot in my early career and should have caught my own bias.

So I don’t like the idea of Ginger Bond, but I may come to regret that too. Glad we are now moving towards a new movie and a new Bond. More debates are coming!

The fact is, with all our preconceptions about Bond we feel they define him. But every generation of fans and general audiences does that afresh. Connery wasn’t Fleming’s idea of Bond (and supposedly not that of many readers either), Lazenby didn’t connect with 69/70 audiences, yet both are accepted today. Bond in 2085 will likely look and feel entirely different from how we imagine him. So will the world of that age. :man_shrugging:t3:

I don‘t know this guy who apparently tested. He could be fantastic.

But that’s not my issue.

We can assume that agencies are flooding the casting director with their hopeful clients, fitting or not. But the invitation to a casting does mean the casting director really sees something in the actors who are chosen, something which aligns with the directives given by the studio, the producer and the director.

In that regard, the hair color is irrelevant, of course, because most actors get either a makeover or wear wigs. And again, that is also not my issue.

We had the charming alpha male in Connery, the arrogant dressman in Lazenby, the witty gentleman in Moore, the melancholic serious actor in Dalton, the instantly charismatic dressman in Brosnan and the troubled brute in Craig.

I would like to see someone different from all of them, really, but one who would nevertheless not have to work hard to persuade as Bond.

Someone who immediately could be labeled James Bond, not someone who is so different from the perception of the character.

But, as I already blabbered on, the next iteration of the character will start from Craig and bring the brooding tough guy further into the fold.

And a casting director choosing this type seems to prove again that Amazon wants to stay in the lane of the Craig era, there cementing a certain kind of Bond in the minds of future generations.

And that means: I really am old now.

Nice descriptions of the various actors, though I think calling Pierce Brosnan a “dressman”, while true to an extent, is nevertheless underselling him. I think a more fitting description would have been “the instantly charismatic hybrid”. But the other descriptors are spot on.

I truly hope they don’t continue on with the Daniel Craig version of the brooding tough guy. His era is my least favorite of the series. Yes, James Bond broods in the novels, but he’s not a tough guy in the Arnold Schwarzenegger/Sylvester Stallone mold. His toughness is more of the Clint Eastwood variety. But ultimately, they need to bring in/make a Bond that is fun again.

I think that’s more likely. Whenever I think of Denis Villeneuve I think of Blade Runner 2049 and the brooding loneliness that has. Humour will always feature to some degree but I’m unsure just how much things will lighten up. I will say this: if forced to choose between a rougher looking unknown like this Scott guy or a baby faced, short Tom Holland type I’m going with the former.

Looking at these casting tapes again I discovered how different these guys approached Bond from the start - and how little they came in with a distinct take on the character, with the exception of Rupert Friend who IMO was the best one and clearly showed acting proficiency the others lacked (they only did their one note approach of being themselves). Unfortunately, Friend‘s voice is too high for Bond (seems to be a thing for me, as I also think ATJ‘s voice is much too high for Bond).

Compare that to this video in which Connery projects so many interesting layers in a mere interview. That is the kind of charisma Bond needs.

When the YOLT poster said Sean Connery IS James Bond it wasn’t lying.

…IS James Bond

They then leave the role.

Once Bond always Bond, as per Lazenby.

We can all assume the next film must be getting close when the obligatory “Bond can’t be a woman” article drops.

They may find things move along more quickly if they decide what Bond is rather than debating what he isn’t.

I’m going to stick my neck out and predict it won’t be Brosnan…

As he said (promoting his new film): Bond is a gift that keeps on giving…

Zero chance and he pokes fun at the concept too. Even if I was curious about Brosnan coming back, it doesn’t push the franchise forward. The question of who would be Bond long term still wouldn’t be answered.
