Not casting Lewis Collins being the biggest mistake imo…

I’d say the biggest mistake was Broccoli/Wilson & MGM/UA not reaching out to Connery in the early 00’s to make one last return as an older Bond at the end of his life. Both Connery & audiences deserved that movie. I mean they eventually would kill Craig’s Bond on screen so a movie about the characters death would have been been irresistible to both Connery & cinemagoers (possibly even Oscar worthy) . Connery was universally adored.

I imagine if they had decided to make that movie in the early 00’s Brosnan would have happily stepped away for that one film then returned in the next

The words ‘parallel universe’ seem to be doing some heavy lifting in that part of the sentence. I struggle to imagine any scenario where Brosnan would have stepped away happily, especially not for some film where Connery in his 70s returns merely to die as James Bond. I seriously don’t see what would have made Brosnan agree to such a deal, nor what might have been the appeal to Eon (or the wider audience).

I agree that some audiences would have deserved such a film, but I wouldn’t go so far to wish it on Connery - nor am I convinced Connery would have agreed to such a premise. The ‘one last shootout for the aging gunslinger’ trope has always been more a brainstorming cliché than an actual pitch for a good adventure, Bond or otherwise. I really think nobody* wanted to see Bond die before NTTD, even if the self contained Craig-verse seemed to go in this direction for some time.

*Well, apart from Craig and Eon. So let’s settle for almost nobody.

We got one farewell Connery Bond from EON and another from McClory/Schwartzman. How many goodbyes do we need?

Anyone would have stepped out of the way if Connery’s Bond returned for one last time. Brosnan especially. Purely because of the significance of such a movie historically & audiences appetite for it. Brosnan is a clever person who has often credited Connery as one of his first major heroes & because he, like everyone who has played Bond, know they wouldn’t be playing the part if the original hadnt been excellent.

And on a purely fan/viewer POV Brosnan & the rest would love to have seen that movie themselves

In that case, shame it didn’t happen…

And Brosnan would have gladly cut back on financing his life style for being compared to Connery and risking to be asked to return even after two or three films already, while Connery hating the business and not even wishing to return for Spielberg and having health problems would have signed on… for EON?

Um, right.

I don’t think that audiences back in the day were ready for multiverse concepts. The general audience’s take wouldn’t have been that it’s a deserved farewell but WTF instead, and that Eon had run that much out of ideas and/or that they found Brosnan that bad that they saw no other way than to bring Connery back (like it happened before).
Brosnan would have seen it exactly this way, and I very much doubt that he would have “happily stepped away”.

Exactly my take. We’ve both seen too many Fifths of October go pffft…

But one of the great effects of imminent big Bond news is that they tend to always bring back some faces from the days of old.

Welcome back, hope that life’s been good too you

I’m, Christ, looking closer to 40 so this is only my second time through this cycle (born 90 so I just missed the previous time) and it is playing the same way.

Agreed. I have no desire to see an elderly Bond die. I don’t really see the point. If he’s reached that age a NSNA or Authorised Biography type story is enough. Let him enjoy a Fleming Jamaica style retirement, even if he ultimately succumbs to alcohol poisoning. We don’t need to see it. If we witness Bond’s death I’d prefer he go down in his prime during a mission. That’s more mythic than mundane. I think those are the two ways that make the most sense. It shows that life and death is a fork in the road.

Thanks, exciting time for sure - I’ve popped in and out, but hopefully something coming which means I am far more engaged again!

All been well. Hope you are too.

The 007 social media is definitely teasing something coming, but no suggestion of a press event today or anything. Can’t imagine they’ll announce something with a tweet. Let’s see what happens!

Happy James Bond Day everyone!

I think that November 3th is a possibility for an announcement. Simply because that was the day (in 1961) that Connery was announced as Bond. Also, because Skyfall was fully announced in 2011, it would not be too strange to announce the actor then.

The fact these are launched today, minus any fanfare about the next Bond, suggests two things:
-Bond No 7 won’t be revealed today, not in the UK nor the US
-and secondly, it’s not a given Omega is even still connected to BOND 26. Milking this now with two collectors items seems like making the most out of the past while they still can.
