Guardian is quite fond of it…
Really? That’s a cool practice, what kinds of things do you like to jot down?
Brief statements, usually a sentence long, that sum up a plot development or character growth. I’ve done it again for both Last Train To Memphis and Careless Love, which means I have the entire chronology of Elvis Presley in note form. It helps me remember what I’ve read, and so I can go over and think about details again. It connects me to the material even more. I started doing it with Count of Monte Cristo and Crime and Punishment. Long books I really wanted to devour every detail with. I haven’t stopped since.
I need to start doing that. I read a lot but so much of it vanishes with time. I bet even brief notes help. Thanks for sharing that!
As for the reviews, it all lines up with what we’ve been seeing. Awesome news all around!
I deliberately went for a 10 kilometre run today, knowing there’s a lot of screen time coming up. Honestly, a lot of games don’t hold my attention the way they used to. I don’t even finish most of them, especially with the excuse of time juggling due to work. But with Bond it’s just different. It activates a part of my brain.
It can only mean good things for the franchise.
It’s already installed on my PS5 Pro. Goes live in about 30 minutes. I can’t believe it’s finally here!!!
It’s game time.
Edit: Done with the training sections and just finished the Slovakia mission. My mind is melting at how good this is. Gibson is shaping up to be one of my favourite incarnations from any medium. First Light understands it’s Bond’s personality that makes him great and the connection you make with him is endearing. I just love the way they realise M’s office, the corridors of MI6, the operations centre and Q Branch. It has a homey feeling like you’re apart of a family. The character work is great. If Amazon do something similar for the films they can’t go wrong. Work again in the morning, but when I get home my real shift starts.
I’ve only played 2-3 hours but I was immediately blown away by the attention to detail, Bond Easter Eggs, Gibson’s performance and all round reverence to all things James Bond. This is a very, very polished game and so much fun already! I look forward to playing more over the coming days.
Im the same. Im 30% in and it is meeting expectations. Engaging story, the Bond easter eggs are fun (the trophy or two that reference the expanse novels are fun)
Calvin Dyson was right when he said you stop thinking about who is playing Bond surprisingly quick.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen you this positive.
Should we create a spoiler thread for 007 First Light? It’s been awhile since we’ve created one of those….
Probably a good idea. Feel free to post general thoughts and reviews here though! Dying to know what everyone’s making of it.
Give it 24 hours, then start one. X-box and pc cant have had it long enough yet.
Then theres the switch…
Lack of opportunity?
It’s very apparent the criticisms of the game had no merit. Even this early in the story Bond is in frequent engagement with interested women who give him compliments. One cutscene even goes further than I was expecting. Bond being ‘bossed around’ by authority is nothing new - he rebels against it and does his own thing. That’s a key point of the story. First Light is celebrating all eras of the character while stepping confidently into the future. Don’t let anyone tell you the franchise can’t be successfully adapted into the modern day.
All of the criticisms came from people who just want to complain and make rage-bait content. As you said @sharpshooter, the game celebrates every part of the Bond canon (cinematic, literary, and video games). The story even seems to take inspiration from a certain source that I’ll save for the spoiler thread. It’s a triumphant return of Bond and Bond video games.
Damn. If this is that good do I need to start gaming?
But how? I don’t even own the hardware.
I’m about 5 hrs into First Light and so far its an absolute triumph. I was already loving the game but then the first major action set piece began and my mind melted. The game play is fantastic but I think the narrative and creative choices are even better. Everything just feels right. I love their delightful reinterpretation of Q and Q-Branch.
First Light truly feels like your playing a Bond movie.
It’s wonderful.
Always exciting to explore something new.
Get a PS5 and get the game separately.
My sentiments exactly. I just finished up the Aleph segment. It’s like a mix of Crab Key and Madagascar from CR, with the fictional location vibe of San Monique. The gunplay towards the end is the best and most lengthy so far. As one would expect I appreciated the statement that “snipers are deadly sharpshooters that never miss”. The conclusion wasn’t what I was expecting in a good way. I think it also comments on the ugly reality of these types of places in real life.
It’s great. Other spiritual things like the training fight giving the Bond/Graves battle at Blades a run for its money. I appreciate that Bond is skilled but not always the strongest combatant in the room. He uses his mind and forward momentum to overcome the odds. That’s always been one of the best parts of Bond, eg. taking down the likes of Oddjob or Jaws.
There’s gameplay, obviously, but it’s nicely woven into exploration and character development that I think you would appreciate. As @Gobi-1 says, it’s like playing through a Bond movie.
