007 First Light - IO Interactive

Played another 6 hours or so, and it just gets better and better. Bond’s little quips have me chortling away. Q showing amazement at Bond’s quick thinking leaving his watch on a plane and using it to track it. “How did you know your watch had a tracker?”

“My toaster has a tracker Q”

The way the game leaves you multiple choices on how to advance a mission, specifically needing some money to gain entry to an exclusive auction in Aleph, is brilliant. I’m actually quite taken aback at the quality shown at every step.

I’m an avid gamer, and have played dozens of games on my PS5, but 007 First Light really shines, if you’ll excuse the pun. So much love and care has gone into crafting the world, characters, shooting mechanics and gadgets. In one of the levels I found a leaflet on a table which had a picture of a very familiar looking cellist on the front- little things like that make it a joy for a Bond nerd!

When you’re in a snowy mountainside complex you walk past a blonde doctor with a very familar name when scanned.

Moneypenny again has the first name Eve. Between the films, the comics and now this, is that first name cannon now?

I like how young Bond seems in this. Since they’ve hinted that they’re going to be making multiple games. We will likely see this version of James Bond evolve into a more recognisable sophisticated tuxedo draped spy with every instalment .

Did they actually use it in the Dynamite comics? I remember that they had another character named Eve and there was a moment that implied her name was also Eve. But please correct me if I’m wrong about the comics.

I think it’s in Reflections of Death and her own one Shot.

Just did a read through both of those as well. Doesn’t appear to be there.

I thought her name was Jane until Skyfall when she said it was Eve.

I believe “Jane” was from The Moneypenny Diaries books, so only a seven years before we got “Eve” in Skyfall.

Moneypenny’s first name IS Jane in The Moneypenny Diaries books. (It’s never mentioned elsewhere in the Ian Fleming or continuation novels). So we could have another split here. In the films Moneypenny’s first name is Eve and in the novels it’s Jane, much like in From Russia With Love it’s Kerim Bey in the film and Darko Kerim in the novel and in For Your Eyes Only it’s Milos Columbo in the film and Enrico Colombo in the short story.

It’s Reflections of Death. Very quick moment towards the end as Moneypenny reacts to the truth serum still in her system.

For any non-gamers around here that want to experience First Light, I can upload clips of the game to watch on YouTube. If anyone is interested.

Oh good catch! I went right past that page. What sharp little eyes you have.

The first step these days is to win the lottery. That might be enough for a down payment on the hardware.

Everything goes up in price but personal salaries. Unless you’re a CEO. Thank you Ronald Reagan.

I can’t believe that I’m speaking up for that man.
It’s not his fault alone. It’s the same elsewhere where he didn’t have a say.

That said, apart from a certain need of money, it would also take a considerable amount of time for me to get into all this (starting with the controller, I’d be Agent K in MiB 2). I’m lacking both, so I decided to watch a bit of gameplay, and I must say that all this looks absolutely great.

I’ve seen Let’s Plays with enthusiastic comments which came from gamers, not from Bond people, and that’s what really matters in the first place this time. It creates a buzz for Bond outside the “usual”fan community and a new branch of fanbase, and that can’t be all bad. And if I’m not all mistaken, this one has the potential to set some new standards.

And the more I think of it, the more I get to the idea that if it is a success, the Bezoes might want to model the new movie after it. Haven’t seen enough of it to say if this is good or bad. But watching all this has opened my mind a bit towards going into new directions.

A PS5 is pretty affordable compared to a gaming PC.

If you’re thinking of buying a console just for this game, keep in mind that you can always sell it later if you’ve finished the game or end up not liking it. You’ll get most of your money back.

If you buy a pre owned PS5 , you will likely get all of your money back

Neither a PS5 nor a gaming PC are affordable. One is just more unaffordable than the other.

The PS5 has gone up in price significantly since it was launched. The rise of software prices has been equally as ridiculous, especially in this instance when the game only clocks in at 20 hours, has no multiplayer, and after tax will end up around $75.

A good start in every important metric so far. People who wait until reviews come out will also be encouraged to make a purchase. It’s having every indication of being a successful venture - a rewarding experience for long time fans while new ones are made. Carry over interest into other Bond media is possible, and even if not in all cases, the brand is still being supported, and it’s being associated with quality.
