Just finished 007 First Light, so I thought I’d write a review of sorts. No spoilers.
Where to begin? You’re thrown into the action immediately, the game treating the first level as a tutorial of course. You learn to sneak, hide, stealthily take-down hires goons and get familiar with the shooting mechanics. Once the intro level is done the title theme kicks off, and this is where I turned up the volume! Lana Del Rey’s song is very classically Bondian, something I think that has been missing from the last two Bond films IMO. It gets the blood pumping, thanks to David Arnold’s rousing score.
And then it’s time to get to work. The gameplay is intuitive and fun. Squeezing the trigger of your service pistol and getting a head-shot feels meaty and crisp. The environment encourages you to be creative. Littered everywhere are things you can turn on with your Q Watch, to distract enemies or blow things up. On every surface there are things you can throw- mugs, bottles, glasses, right at an enemy to stagger them, before you vault over a counter top and go for a takedown move. The fighting works much like in the Batman Arkham games, where you have to parry, punch and pummel your enemies. Grab one and push them into a circuit board and watch as they get electrocuted. Throw one off the edge of a cliff or balcony. Blast one in the face with your Q Watch laser. All the options you have make enemy encounters a highlight of the game.
Then we have the locations. I won’t mention any here, but in classic Bond style you jet off to a variety of places, giving the game the true globe-trotting feeling of the film series. Missions will have you needing to gain access to restricted areas, meaning you’ll need to eavesdrop on conversations, pickpocket, bluff and cause distractions. It’s done so well, sprinkled with so many Easter Eggs and Bond aliases from the films. It’s like playing an interactive Bond movie, using your smarts to get around and progress. It’s done so well and with so much love, care and attention. Take a bow, IOI. The writing, creative and technical teams have done Bond so very proud.
Lastly, Patrick Gibson puts in a power-house of a performance as a young, reckless James Bond. In another dimension he’d be picked to be Bond number 7. His quips, asides and insults had me giggling away throughout the game; he’s pitch perfect.
Overall, it’s a 10/10 from me. The only niggle I have is that the loading times are a bit longer than I’d expect from a PS5 game, sometimes up to 25 seconds if you die and have to start again at a checkpoint. But that’s me scraping the barrel for something negative to say. The graphics, gameplay, story, call-backs, lighting and direction are of such high-quality. “Earn the number?”Having played 25 hours and completing the game now I feel like have, and so have IOI Interactive.
“So 007, lots to be done. Ready to get back to work?”
“With pleasure M, with pleasure”
Bring on the next one.
