Movies: Presumably 2026, maybe Beyond

In this I don’t get any Bondian vibe from him at all.

But I find the whole trailer silly and boring. Not bitten by a spider this time but getting a drop of blood by a lion? And being transformed into a super-violent thug, just like Russell “I used to get Oscar bait roles” Crowe-Daddy wanted him to?

Pass.

re: Kraven…

I never could understand why, if you’re trying to present a character who’s such a fearsome threat, you’d give him a name that’s a homonym for a word meaning “cowardly.”

I can remember a time when just that trailer would have been rated “R.” We’ve certainly come a long way…just in the wrong direction.

More than once reading that, I thought “ah Chris…you watched your little brothers 2 Tv series! Isn’t that nice”

Because “cowardly” doesn’t have to mean “weak” or “the opposite of brave.” It can also be used to imply traits such as “dastardly,” “underhandedness,” or “lack of moral courage.”

Think in terms of “(of an action) carried out against a person who is unable to retaliate.” For example: “A cowardly act of terrorism” or “a cowardly attack on a helpless victim.”

It is - it’s rated as a red band trailer, which is the trailer version of an R rating.

!
Well I’m officially an out of touch geezer. I had no idea trailers had ratings.

So is the promise of this supposed to be that there’s loads more gore in the film, or is it just an appeal to those viewers who want to see the same violent scenes shown here, just uncut and in sharper detail on a huge screen? Either way, not my cuppa.

Good point about “craven” also meaning underhanded and without honor, though the root question remains why a villain would willingly present themselves with such a moniker. Its like “Dick Dastardly” or “Dr Evil.” You’d think it would be counter productive to schemers to go by a name that gives the game away as soon as theyre introduced. Then again the Green Lantern Corps couldn’t forsee any trouble from a member named “Sinestro” so I guess folks are just a lot dimmer in comics. But it’s one of those things that doesnt translate well to live action, and reminds you no matter how “mature” the gore gets, this material is still kids’ stuff at root.

Heh. Just remembered there’s a real life director named Craven.

In the comics his name is Sergei Kravinoff, a Russian. He wanted to anglicize, or make an English version of, his name. Hence Kraven.

Also, it sounds cool

But was that added late in the game? I only know Spider-Man from the Ditko run, so like the first 38 issues.

Nicholas Hoult - brilliant actor…but for Superman?!?

I actually can see him as Clark and Superman.

I could even see him as Bond.

Clark I can see. Just don’t see Superman.

Happy to be proven wrong if he gets the role though.

My guess is Corenswet gets the part. Not sure if I’d want it, though. Another failure to launch box office flop would be absolutely disastrous. There’s a lot hinging on the reboot.

He would rather be a nice, less macho Superman.

Christopher Reeve will never be surpassed, of course.

She even reminds me a little bit of Margot Kidder…

Rachel Brosnahan is a casting slam dunk. Don’t know anything about Corenswet. He was in an episode of House of Cards but I don’t remember him.

I was going to make a sarcastic joke about him looking like every other actor who has played Superman, but it mostly got me wondering why Superman is unchangeable whilst characters like Batman, Sherlock Holmes and James Bond are. I mean look at The Flash, 3 actors all “Batman” but other than white and male have no similarities, yet all the Superman actors, tv or film, look like…

Because that’s Superman.

Holmes and Bond were created as literary characters. There are vague descriptions of their physical appearances, but they are not necessarily identified through them. A tall man, a prominent nose does help a bit, put him into Baker Street, have him do a bit of deduction stuff and talk gibberish and maybe give hin the deerstalker – and you’ve got your Holmes. Put someone in a tux, give him an Aston, a Martini, a PPK and a beautiful woman by his side – there’s your Bond. A cape, a mask, a suit, a cave and a Batmobile – anyone who can play a millionaire can be Batman.

But Supes – he was created as a comic book character, unlike Batman, he never wears a mask (the only bit of disguise is a pair of glasses, and we all know that a pair of fake glasses don’t make a Baronet). His facial appearance is known from the start and it is part of his superhero image. Any actor who plays him has to look like that (to a certain extent).

An actor who’s to play Batman could look like Boris Becker, whereas for someone to play Superman, this would be a no-no. I’ll leave it up to your imagination if he’ be suitable for Holmes or Bond :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
