Movies: Presumably 2026, maybe Beyond

I find that odd, given Sherlock Holmes in particular has this idea of what they looked* like from the start that’s not disputed, yet they constantly are changing. Superman never does.

I’m not arguing, I’m just wanting to enjoy the conversation.

My wall, to give context

I guess Superman embodies visually what a strong male was supposed to look like when he was created.

The lack of a disguise made it difficult or even impossible to change this.

It also strengthens the comfort this character gives: he is a nice guy, almost innocent in his beliefs, reliable and always „the same“.

He does seem to have landed on a beardless western Jesus as a look (“NO, Jesus was a man from Oxford!” to quote Eddie Izzard)

As noted upthread, Superman’s “look” is his face, whereas other heroes’ look is their masks. People raised a stink about Keaton initially but in the end the Batman costume was very well done and when he put on the cowl, he was Batman. Ezra Miller looks nothing like the Flash but in the outfit…well, kinda. The various Spider-Men look nothing like each other or the comic, but with a mask covering their entire face (and/or turned into a CGI mannequin), it’s irrelevant. Aquaman I can’t explain, except that the comic version never gets any respect anyway so maybe the only way to go is a complete do-over.

Superman without dark hair, a solid jawline, decent height and a respectable (but not massive) build would be like Batman without the ears, or Wonder Woman in a track suit (sorry, Cathy Lee). In fact, I’d even have issues if he didn’t have blue eyes, and as much as I enjoy Tyler Hoechlin’s take on Superman, it bothers me that he sports a trendy stubble on his super-chin.

Same here.

Tyler Hoechlin without stubble tends to look like…

Which is a hard push of a supposed dad of teenagers, no matter how much “well, he’s got kryptonian dna” lines they push

That is probably okay for a three hour drama, low for a Nolan movie. But maybe, with award attention playing through the next year a winner.

I get a Barbie comedy movie tracking bigger than a biopic on the creation of nuclear weapons (say it out loud)

But I never get how the come up with specific numbers

Pre-sales?

Not only 3 hours but also R rated…

Agreed. Wonder if DC and MCU have overextended themselves with all the upcoming phase 5 stuff and DCEU reboot. Bet there are a lot of folks out there that are glad the checks have already cleared.

I’m cautiously optimistic.

The Nolanverse?

I was mostly sharing because it’s Bond’s special effects director who came up with how they could do the impossible thing

Given they’re both historical films set during WWII Oppenheimer is technically part of the same ‘cinematic universe’ as Dunkirk.

I know, I was kind of joking. Although TENET already mentions Oppenheimer…

Nolan’s filmography does seem to be a train of thought
