The source is actually a CGI character appearing in the film.
Often a sign of a bad writer.
That Empire link isnāt working so for anyone else that canāt access itā¦
The name is Safin.
It should be pointed out that is a Russian surname.
The link returns a 404 Error, did they take down the article?
Nothing much surprising in thereā¦also FEAR NOT FRIENDS! The article does go into detail about every misstep the production has had yet again.
I donāt have a problem with it. Seems like it could be an asset to the film, much like how Bond and Vesper had a playful sense of fun. Iām eager to see the dynamic of Bond being in a marriage. Anything that allows us to see the world from Bondās perspective connects us to him more. And that goes for Madeleine too, who I think needs that extra development.
part of the allure of Bond is his mystery, a little character insight is fine but not too much
Fleming set the standard when he gave us the obituary, which tells us a great deal about the man and his past. We know how he feels about relationships, and how they often deteriorate. We know about his trust issues. I honestly donāt see anything to be seriously worried about here with a married Bond. Existing traits are just amplified. Things could eventually go the way of OHMSS, or even Trigger Mortis with Pussy Galore. But if itās Craigās last, a happier ending seems more likely.
Thatās all very well.
I just donāt think that this āscoopā is really what EON thought would make Bond any timelier.
There must be much more that PWB has brought to the dialogue. If not I would consider those āchangesā very timid and pointless.
If the point is that sheās her own woman, friendly but independent, it seems in line with the existing character. She didnāt take the White surname of her father - she uses Swann instead. Small details like that make characters unique.
So long as it doesnāt mean another āwomen in refrigeratorsā trope of killing off the girl.
Iām looking up the name and itās coming up as Arabic, a variation on Safeen.
New working linkā¦
IIRC, Malek signed under the the condition that he wouldnāt play an Egyptian or Arabian character.
Itās a Russian name, too: thereās Marat Safin, Russian tennis player.
Iāve lived in the Middle East for most of my life and I can confirm that Safeen or Safain isnāt a name commonly used there, havenāt heard that name ever before. The closest I can think of is āSuffinā which isnāt the same as āSafinā
With more 2020 previews in magazines coming up we can expect more info snd photos already prepared by the marketing machine soon!
My first thought was the Russian tennis player too, and we know there is a Russian link to part of the plot. Slightly strange to choose a name so much affiliated with a specific person (rather than the more generic Silva, for instance), but letās see.
Russian number plates and now the name, makes me wonder if SMERSH is back.
Be interesting if Bond were caught between the two warring entities SPECTRE and SMERSH.
A little like the man with no name in A Fistful Of Dollars, or the ronin in Yojimbo. If Bond is no longer MI6 he is a ronin of sorts (a warrior without a master).
To take the comparison further (way too far for reason) perhaps Bond could offer his services, or provide them under duress to both entities and play one off against the other a la AFOD and Yojimbo.
Like in Licence To Kill, itās an easy story fit for the Bond character.
Good catch
