I honestly cannot wait to see that DB5 chase. That’s going to be something else.
Lea briefly talks NTTD
How does Safin make Bond, or even more broadly, agents in the profession of spying, redundant? Craig suggested Safin considers himself a “saviour of humanity”, and Malek agreed.
Time to use my imagination:
What if Safin has created a lethal chemical or poison in a turf war against SPECTRE? Maybe with technology to locate targets and disperse the formula. He’s getting revenge, but also ‘delivering a public service’ in killing bad guys. The poison could have other future uses too, of course, such as extortion. His goal could be replacing Blofeld and being the number one global kingpin.
Think you’re absolutely spot on. And Fukunaga confirmed that last part in the December Empire issue - Safin believes ruling the underworld is his rightful place.
There is perhaps another explanation for the note. We saw Madeleine burning a piece of paper on the hotel balcony in the previous TV spot. I can’t find the explanation at the moment, but someone pointed out that burning notes might be a local tradition in that part of Italy - perhaps to atone for past mistakes. So, Bond himself may have written the “forgive me” note and is now burning it at Vesper’s tomb. This may be part of the healing process that Madeleine, as a psychologist, has encouraged him to follow.
I still don’t think that’s Vespers tomb. Why would a British national be buried in an elaborate tomb in Matera, Italy?
Great idea that chimes with the BBs comments on this closing Craig’s arc.
I’m sure one of the zillion writers could of come up with a plausible (or not) reason.
They’re also going to need to come up with a reason how said tomb looks like it’s a couple hundred years old…
It could be a “let’s not mention it and hope no one notices”.
But, yeah, very good point and will be pretty hilarious if it is an error.
Then again, it could be a family tomb, which would also speak to the reason she’s buried in Italy. After all to most the word Vesper probably conjures an image of Italians on mopeds.
Bond’s mother is Swiss, so there’s nothing stopping Vesper’s family hailing from Italy…assuming of course its Bond who is visiting a grave - bearing mind Madeline has also lost a loved one…one who owned a huge estate in Italy…
yeah Madeleine and Mr. White is logical to an extent, do we know if there is only the one sequence in Matera or does Bond return at some point during the events of the film? it could be the chase/betrayal ends at said tomb and when he gets back finds the forgive me letter - if he returns at another point he could burn it if he holds onto it or burn it before he leaves etc…
She did die in Italy. But that was in Venice, not Matera. I doubt it’s Vesper’s tomb. But it is likely Spectre-related. Lucia perhaps? Or it could be directly related to Blofeld…
It’s also worth pointing out that we can’t even be certain Bond is burning the note at the tomb. That shot appears after the tomb shot in the trailer but if you look at it, it could be anywhere during the Matera sequence…
Right - and again, you’re not buried where you die, you’re buried where your family is from, and she sure sounded British to me. And a crypt just seems to be too much for someone of her “rank” in life.
I vote not Vesper.
Mathis. The original character from the book was French, but in the movies, it seemed like he was Italian (and played by an Italian actor). And don’t forget his last words: “Forgive her. Forgive yourself.”
Hmm, now there’s an idea.
I also vote not Vesper. I hope they finally let her go.
See the thing for me is I don’t WANT him to be still stuck on Vesper. He went from “the job’s done, the bitch is dead” to “he’s not important and neither was she” to him seeing the VHS tape of her and throwing it away. Him to still be all sad over her 15 years later just doesn’t fit the character.
I don’t want my Bond to be laying flowers at the grave of a bitch who betrayed him.
I was going to speculate that the crypt belongs to the White family (Since he had a villa on Lake Como), but I’m struggling with why he would be asking for his forgiveness.
Again, we don’t know for sure that the burning note was in the same scene as the crypt…
