NO TIME TO DIE - title discussion AND POLL

Fair enough, not to mention, some of the dialogue comes off as very porn-y.
“I need a refilling.”
“In, out, in, out.”

Then there’s the MTS and the theme song…oh my god! Octopussy is a porno!

I’m quite happy with it, particularly after two single-word titles starting with S.
Much better than A Reason To Die and it has a slight Fleming vibe.

Not really.

In these cases, Fleming seemed always to take an established expression, and thence twist it.

I say, ‘always’. Of his 14 book output, indeed, just twice.

You Only Live Once and Live and Let Live were the only two examples of said twisting. I think NTTD might be more reminiscent of Benson’s considerations…

No time to die sounds like something Fleming might have written into his notebook for further use or reference, perhaps without finding a good way to tweak/use it in the end.

Have you actually seen any pornos?

Um No…

Hey, nobody has!

I have seen a few. None involved octopodes, but several of the animated ones featured tentacles.

In Amsterdam I found a booklet called Dog Instruction Part 4. At uni I planted it in an annoying flatmate’s room when his parents came to visit.

Current result of our poll:

44 per cent like

34 per cent not sure

10 per cent think it will grow

and 9 per cent don‘t have time for NTTD

As I suspected, it would seem to be a controversial title with fans - but I also think the general public will be fairly fond of the title.

The reason for this difference is simply that we fans tend to be much more invested, with some of us championing ‘Shatterhand’, ‘Garden of Death’ or ‘Tears of a Sparrow’ or ‘Below the Ice’ for years. Anything Eon came up with was bound to disappoint part of the fanbase.

The public meanwhile wouldn’t have cared a lot if the title had simply been ‘Commander Bond’.

Honestly in the four decades I’ve been going to these things, everyone I’ve ever seen in line at the box office always asks for tickets to “James Bond,” not whatever title they slap on “this year’s model.” (the one exception being when a couple boys in '83 asked for tickets to “Octopussy” and launched into giggle fits.)

They can call these things whatever they want, as long as they make the “007” prominent on the poster to actually sell tickets. Individual titles only take on importance later when you want to discuss past entries in comparison to each other. And the only folks I know who do that are devoted fans. Everyone else says stuff like “the one with Jaws” or “the one with the volcano.”

Actually, to name the film that would compete with the Connery Bond “Octopussy” and still get away with it so easily seems to be proof that those were more innocent times - and a lot less snarky ones.

Imagine that title today…

It simply wouldn’t be used. Likewise Pussy Galore’s and Kissy Suzuki’s names. And I have to admit there is a parody streak in these that doesn’t seem to belong there any more. Fleming used some of these in a tongue-in-cheek way that seems to be as outdated as actors suddenly singing in a film.

Maybe it is that I am from The Netherlands, or that English is not my first language, but for me I didn’t think anything funny/peculiar about the title in 1983, just that it was an original one from Fleming, named in the book after a pet octopus and it also was not an issue at all here in my country, nobody cared about it, than that is was just the title of the new Bond movie.

You best die another day, then.

Oh my god! Just live and let die already!

Now that I’ve had more time to digest the title, I have to say I do like it even more. It’s really apart of the Bond canon now - 007.com already has it listed on Craig’s official film count too.

No time to die hard

No Time To Live Die Repeat
