The Quick News Submission - all the news that’s not fit to go somewhere else

Yes, the score is great, I have it from the same label which also released the “The Seawolves” score.

I didn’t realise there is also a cd in this boxset.

But like so many things these days this will just be shrugged off.

I received it 15 minutes ago. Wow! It’s much bigger than I expected and feels heavy, probably because of the hardcover book.

Once again, weird.

F1 is now considered Oscar worthy?
By that logic any Bruckheimer blockbuster would have been nominated before.

And nothing for WAKE UP DEAD MAN?

Oscar, you’re making no sense anymore, you just want to be popular.

And 16 nominations for SINNERS? Unnecessary.

F1 is this year’s THE TOWERING INFERNO. The other Best Picture nominees in 1975: THE GODFATHER PART II; CHINATOWN; THE CONVERSATION; and LENNY.

Why unnecessary? Or asked another way: which nominations were unmerited?

If that’s what they’re aiming for, they’re doing it entirely wrong.

Because it does not deserve to have more than ALL ABOUT EVE.

And while the film works and uses its genre to say something about the state of the States, I don’t think that anyone apart from Lindo did deliver award worthy performances nor was asked to. They did what was needed - but this still remains a horror film about Vampires attacking a barn.

Compare this with the stellar performance of Josh O‘Connor in WAKE UP DEAD MAN. Who got no nomination.

Also, apart from the cinematography I think SINNERS is just well done but not as magnificent as it is hyped to be.

Nor is ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER.

But, as you reminded me of the nomination for THE TOWERING INFERNO (unbelievable…), the Oscars are mainly trying to be in the zeitgeist.

As an ardent Mankiewiczean, part of me agrees with you. AAE is the record holder for Classical Hollywood. TITANIC tied it because it was eligible for two Sound categories. LA LA LAND also benefited from those two categories’ existence (which the Academy has since collapsed back into one). LA LA LAND also had songs that received nominations. SINNERS has Casting and Hair & Make-Up categories that did not exist in AAE’s time, so that was a help there.

I think Michael B. Jordan’s performance as the Stackhouse twins is amazing, and Wunmi Mosaku’s performance is quite fine as well.

SINNERS is also a musical–in fact, it is more musical than horror film. Coogler regularly cuts away from horror elements to musical ones. The score and songs are terrific, embracing and transmitting the Delta blues tradition in a way I have never seen before on film.

In a way, the whole movie is one, long, beautiful Delta blues song. The camera moves and the film cuts to the rhythms of the blues, as it expresses the joys, hopes, fears, and agonies of Black life and culture. And as with the blues, either one feels it or one doesn’t.

Lastly, the vampires attack a sawmill that has been transformed into a place where Black people are truly free. To see it as merely a barn is to miss a huge portion of the film.

I did, and I find O’Connor’s performance good, but not stellar. Then again, I find the whole film pedestrian–well-made, but not earth-shaking.

Here is where we strongly disagree - but I am so happy that we can exchange our reasons and accept our different perspectives!

Of course. I think SINNERS is a heavy lift for many viewers outside of the United States (and for many within as well). It only made $83 million in markets outside of the U.S.

As for WUDM: the queer angle did not work for me. Johnson and Craig tried to be respectful and authentic, but it fell flat for me. I think if they had been more irreverent, they would have nailed that aspect of the film. But being straight men, their mindfulness constricted their creativity.

Just out of curiosity: I did not detect any queer angle there. Sure, Benoit Blanc is gay and an atheist, but that’s it. And the dialogue he is given is so sharp and poignant, perfectly delivered by Craig, that IMO it could not have been more irreverent.

In fact, I believe this is what turned off many older Academy members from nominating the script at least.

What was the queer angle in WUDM??

About the Wild Geese 4K box… this afternoon, while waiting for my MR LP, I tried to get the 4K disc out of the box, but I didn’t succeed, also the other discs were way too strong put in the booklet to get them out. Am I the only one who has this problem? I don’t want to damage the box, or the discs. The hardcover book is fantastic though! Wow!

If I don’t succeed to get the discs out than I am thinking of also buying the regular version.

They are tightly put in. Try again…

This is not exactly ‘news’ nor is it particularly Bond/thriller/spy-themed - outside Moore’s legendary guest appearance back in the day - yet I feel this forum would be incomplete if we didn’t have this covered in some manner…

This gives me hope.
