Yeah they went pretty in depth there. Looks like a semi mixed reaction so far.

In the La Meme Nikita review, I don’t quite get why There are “colourful parrots chirping for the terrorists responsible for murdering her entire family.” Very odd.

I’m avoiding reviews (I like reading them after I’ve seen a movie), but in general this reviews headline certainly rings true for me.

Sounds like it’s run through with the usual tropey slo-mo crap; look how mean our heroine is, head tilted down, eye-balling the cam as she walks towards us, impervious to shrapnel and shockwaves as something goes big-boom-fireball-blah behind her. Oh, and also notice her great hair and cool clothes…

A shame, since the trailer gives off a grittier vibe. Well, hopefully I’ve just misinterpreted that review snippet supplanting my own pet hate instead. Wouldn’t be the first time!

Metacritic’s review aggregator…

Reading all the reviews I get the impression that either you like Lively or not, like the unglamorous depiction or find it ridiculous, like the action or not…

Frankly, it seems like only a few really review the movie and most just promote their usual predilections.

Looking forward to this movie.

Good (thoughtful) review as usual from Birth Movies Death. Mixed - generally say its pretty good with flashes of great and ending a bit weak. https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2020/01/29/the-rhythm-section-review-blake-lively-carries-the-tune

Has anyone in here watched it yet ? It’s out today in most places.

Variety is predicting a $4-8 million opening weekend in the U.S. and it’s sitting at 28% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ouch.

Rhythm Section, which cost $50M before P&A, is expected to die according to tracking with a single digits gross over 3-days at 3,049 locations.

Last night off 7PM shows, Rhythm Section made $235K from 2,256 theaters. Paramount shelled out $30M for domestic rights, and most foreign territories except for China and Germany.

Was listening to a review of it that said “It’s not Red Sparrow, it’s not Atomic Blonde, it’s Atomic Blah”

I saw it today and I’d give it a mild thumbs up. It starts out slow and Blake Lively’s character is not very likable. In fact, the first quarter of the movie is fairly dark and depressing. But things pick up when she meets Jude Law’s character and eventually goes on her personal mission. This is where the movie works. Lively’s character is not a killing machine and she makes mistakes which result in painful consequences for her and others. The acting is fine, the action solid and believable, although there was a little too much shaky cam in a couple of scenes for me (not throughout, just here and there). And the hairdo(s) they gave Lively for much of the film is/are so bad/distracting that it makes Timothy Dalton’s Licence To Kill casino hairstyle seem stylish in comparison. Also, there’s a nice little twist towards the end of the film.

So overall, it’s a mixed bag, but it does have entertaining moments. I doubt it will be a hit and judging by a skimming of the reviews, it won’t be, but I also think those critics are being a bit harsh. So I say go and see it if you want to, just keep your expectations in check.

I had hoped to see it today but I’ve been incapacitated by a cold. While I was rooting for this one I’m afraid the reactions aren’t making it sound like one I need to rush out and see. Will see what the next few weeks bring.

“The Rhythm Section” is set to open in the U.S. in 9th place with $2.9 million.

Ho-lee-sheet

I haven’t been on TV much recently, but has there been much advertising / hype for The Rhythm Section? I haven’t seen much–virtually none–on the internet other than here. If that’s the case, it would be hard for it to garner much enthusiasm among the masses to go and see it to do well in theaters.

I really can’t say, I’m neither on FB nor Twitter and do not watch a lot of tv either. I certainly don’t remember having seen any trailers except here. Very low key approach.

There was hardly any marketing. Paramount dropped the ball on this one.

Let’s look at the bright side: EON will have to acknowledge that in this age only the big franchises have a chance to keep your company afloat.

Not sure how much of a difference more investment from paramount would’ve made. January is also the month to bury movies for a reason - the least appetising time of year to venture out to cinema; the masses are cold, knackered and skint after Xmas.

So I’d imagine that even if the figures are lower than expected, they wouldn’t have expected much of or they’d have waited a month to release it. Whatever the co petition is in Feb they deemed TRS not striping enough to compete.

January is not a month to bury a movie for many years now. And look at the box office returns of BAD BOYS 3 from this January.

Sure, maybe two action movies were too much for the market place. But really, any movie these days needs to have huge marketing efforts in order to reach the public. The studio clearly wasn’t behind this - and since I have only seen the trailers I can’t comment on whether the movie did not inspire the necessary confidence.

Maybe EON should have gone directly to Netflix with this concept.
