If everything went perfect and they got really lucky, there’s a minute chance.

Kind of like the idea of a flea killing an elephant, pedantry says it not impossible but I would in no way recommend you put money on the flea to win.

Just webbed hands. Underwater base? Unaffordable in the long run, and impossible to maintain. After a few years, you need the plumbers every other day because there’s a leak somewhere. And the effort it takes, when you realize that you forgot to buy some milk, again…

Oh, one has personell for stuff like that. But those people cost a small fortune. And even though they’ve done it dozens of times, there still needs to be a certified diving instructor with the team. You don’t wanna know the fees these guys are asking…

A propos of nothing, do any of the kids on the board find it strange not to currently have a main release poster doing the rounds?

I mean something with full credits and a rating certificate.

I only wonder as the ‘age-old’ image of Craig against a white background, looking as though he’s fumbling around for a walking stick, still currently looks to be the main thrust of the imagery and for me, not a kid I hasten to assure, I was wondering if something like the collage poster that appears to be predominantly an eastern release was going to be the UK quad poster. Seems maybe not.

And so, if the kids could give a damn, it might be one more nail in the coffin for posters as advertising. (A definition of a poster is something printed as opposed to gifs and jifs etc. that fly around social media)

Indeed.

The first: in the UK was just a Coming Soon poster (printed) and is so far the only thing with full credits.
The second: is the Eastern regions’ release. And is what I was hoping might be turned into the UK’s thrust with credits.
The third: is the one with the walking stick which, by now, might have needed a) full credits and a rating being included, or, more likely b) a completely new design to ward off the memories of cancellations past…

Unless, as I am asking the kids, posters are so completely a thing of the past that that sort of deal is no longer needed…?

That third poster - is it just referred to now as the Walking Stick poster? - still makes me shake my head. Somebody signed off on that. Somebody in a marketing department, probably being paid a good salary, thought that that image would make for a good poster. Craig looks like he’s just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar at 3 am and he’s trying to act cool about it.

Given it’s a poster in the 2020/21, I don’t think it is high on anyone’s agenda or, indeed, on it at all.

It was 2016 when I first noticed just how film marketing had changed. Designed posters are gone, replaced by obnoxious

Oh I really do not know how it is referred to? As little as possible might be one way of looking at it.

‘Walking stick’ only be me I think, simply because it was the first thing that came to mind. Certainly the ‘look’ is in keeping with ones retirement from the job…

I saw on Instagram that the guy who had come up with this look, had a bunch of followers all agreeing that he’d ‘absolutely nailed it.’ I thought otherwise.

I need to track it down - saw an image on Twitter and Insta - but that ‘walking stick’ poster is out there, with full credits, on the invite for cast/crew screenings of the film.

Also - and I know a lot comes down to your specific definition of a poster…I’d disagree that posters are a thing of the past!

Well, the thing now is that film theatres these days use screens to advertise their program.

Has the advantage that you can change from one film to another without the need to actually
move/remove physical stuff. Technically it’s the same process to design these images - but you don’t need any printing and the marketing is ready-for-use with a click.

There still remain cardboard displays of course. But I wonder how much of a thing they are in the greater scheme, single digit percentages? I think the actual physical poster could be close to the point where they are printed on demand for the collectors rather than for the marketing.

The one sheet or quad format remains the same creatively - just like feature films…much like cinemas for that, the question is how important the printed form is for posters! And same goes for trailers / cinemas.

Good call on the trailers. They used to be important for marketing inside theatres, i.e. people who were already on the premises. And to a lesser extent for tv promotion. Accessibility was limited and target audience often not present.

Now they are as near ubiquitous as the limits of the internet allow. People seeing them in cinemas or on the telly are probably outnumbered by those catching them on social media by the millions each week.
