When you feel like a James Bond moment?

 Happily No, but it was huge one of those twin rotor jobs. The only “water” was on the drivers seat

Another bond moment for me today. The Maidstone town centre bus station has renovated with local artists painting murals about Maidstone and it’s history. Although it was done a few months ago,I only noticed this today!

It is because the novel of Moonraker features Maidstone in several chapters

Not exactly a James bond moment as such, but on Thursday I was dressed like this

s-l400 (3)
I had been to the funeral directors and a bank to sort out one of my late mothers bank accounts And met up with my mate Jeff to have a few drinks in her honour. After consuming eight pints of lager and four double Jamesons, they refused to serve us anymore! I felt like saying “are you ejecting James bond!!?”

On Sunday I was on the way back from meeting with the reverend who is going to be conducting the service and the eulogy at my mum’s funeral next week. I was driving up the A20 London road and passed the Thomas Whyte pub, that is featured in the novel of Moonraker

Just back from doing some shopping in town,as I passed a charity shop, I noticed this certain book in the window!

As I was driving home, I gave way to a lady driving a range rover and the number plate was 0007

After sipping a few to many glasses of scotch last night, I had a look at bond style watches online and saw this lovely piece

For around £8000…

So I went on eBay and bought

This lookalike for ÂŁ34, it should be okay to wear to work!

It arrived last night and actually it’s better than I expected

I think the best test of how it looks will be the next time I’m wearing a suit ,which is normally every couple of weeks

The best test is whether the watch will still work in three or four months.

I have a great James Bond moment(s) that happened this past summer. Sit back it’s a long story.

A close friend of mine was getting married in Michigan and I wanted to attend. Flying would be too expensive and with Covid-19 still a threat I didn’t want to be trapped in a tube with a bunch of strangers 30,000 feet in the air. As I’ve always wanted to do a solo cross country road trip I decided to drive.

My friend who was getting married has a twin brother whom I’m also good friends with and who was planning to be at the wedding. However his twin brother’s second child was born a month prior and due to some medical issues had to remain hospitalized and was schedule for surgery a few days before the wedding. He made the decision not to go to attend. My friend understood but of course was disappointed that his twin brother could not be there for the wedding.

So the trip for me was just over 1200 miles and I would spend two days driving stopping just a little over the half way point in southern Illinois. I made the first day with no problems and departed on the second day to central Michigan. I was in the middle of a corn field in Illinois when the groom’s twin brother called me. This was a surprise as I had no idea why he would be calling me.

He was recruiting me for a secret mission.

His newborn had come through the surgery successfully and would be able to come home soon. His wife told him it would be okay for him to catch a late flight to attend the wedding. He needed me to pick him up at the airport at midnight. He told no one he was coming. It would be a complete surprise to the groom and their family.

He never canceled his reservation he made months earlier so he still had a room at the resort where the wedding would be. He called the hotel and told them he was coming but to keep it a secret and to give me an envelope with his reservation and the key to his room when I checked it. The only people who knew where him, his wife, the hotel manager and now me. I gladly accepted.

I arrived at the resort that evening and checked in. I signed the paper work and was handed my key to my room . The room turned out to be room number 7! I was then given the envelope with my friends reservation and room key. They wrote my friends name on the envelope and my gut told me to flip it over which I did. A good thing I did too, not ten seconds later two of our friends arrived just behind me. They spooked me a little but I played it off and simply being caught off guard.

That evening there was a reception and a bunch of our mutual friends where there. The twin brother was brought up several times and everybody was disappointed that he wouldn’t be there. Little did they know.

I told them all I was tired, which I was, and that I would be turning in early to bed, which I was not. My friend was texting me letting me know where he was at. He eventually made it to Detroit but his flight to Traverse City kept getting pushed backed. I stayed up a paced around in my hotel room just keeping myself awake. Finally he plane departed Detroit and I could head to the airport which was about an hour north of the resort. I carefully snuck out of the hotel and hoped no one would see me. Thankfully no one did.

I have never been to Michigan before and where I was wasn’t too different from rural East Texas, just different types of pine trees. The roads I took to get me to the airport really took me deep into the boondocks of the forest. Winding roads with hills and valleys and trees on both sides. There were several ‘Bear Crossings’ signs posted. Quite spooky since I had never been there before. I thought I might encounter bigfoot.

I finally made it to the airport and eventually my friend arrived. I handed him his envelop and with luck his room was across the hall from mine. We returned to the hotel and snuck back in. The next morning there was a schedule of events leading up to the wedding ceremony. Breakfast was from 8 to 10 and then the groups would split up into the brides and grooms parties. My friend was going to surprise his brother in his hotel room at 11 when the groom and groomsmen were going to meet in his hotel room to hang out while the bride and the bridesmaid were getting their hair and make up done.

So I attend the breakfast and text my fiend who is still in his hotel room if he would like me to sneak him up some breakfast. He said his was fine but would like some coffee. I find a coffee pot in the lobby and pour a glass and grab some cream and sugar. I go up to his door and making sure know one is around I softly knock. He starts to open the door when I here someone coming down the stairs which are right next to out rooms. I tell his to shut the door. I immediately spin around to my door and start to unlock it.

The person who came down the stairs was the groom! He saw I had coffee in my hands which would not be unusual except I rarely drink coffee. He immediately notices the cup in my hand and asked what I was doing. I told him I was simply tried from the drive, which was true, and that I needed some coffee, which I didn’t. He seems satisfied with the answer and we chatted just a bit in the hallway with him not knowing that his twin brother was standing behind the door just behind him.

Finally the groom went downstairs and as soon as I new he was out of ear shot I knocked again. My friend cracked the door open I stuck the coffee in his hand and threw the cream and sugar into his room and immediately shut the door and went into mine.

Another close call!

While we waited to surprise him my friend faced time his brother and family members wishing them well and that he was sad he couldn’t be there with them. Sneaky. Finally the time came to surprise the groom. My friend snuck across the hall into my room. The plan was that I would following him upstairs to his brothers room and film with my camera over his should so we could get everybody’s reaction when. I texted the groom and told him I was coming up. I started filming and up the stairs and down the hall we went. Thankfully we didn’t encounter anybody on the way there.

My friend knocked on the door and expecting it was me opened the door to find his twin brother. It took him a couple of seconds for it to register and then he let out a squeal of joy followed by several f-bombs.

Mission accomplished.

I really did feel like James Bond on a secret mission. Especially when I checked into the hotel and received my secret envelop. I felt like I was in Casino Royale. One of the most fun things I’ve every done.

Also happy to report my friends new baby is doing just fine and has been home for several months.

I left it on the dining table last night and when I came downstairs to put it on this morning,it had lost eight hours already! As it had no instructions,I do not know if it is wind up or battery, so gave it a little wind up,reset the time and now,six hours later,it is still keeping perfect time…will just see what happens tomorrow,at least it does not have a date window…

It sounds like you have a movement where wearing it (the motion of wearing it) is what keeps it wound. That’s why leaving it on a table overnight caused it to lose time. Give it a good 10sec shake then keep it on and it should keep fine time.

Well I did the same last night, left it for around 14 hours and it was still keeping perfect time.

The rotary watch I bought for ÂŁ99 in the January sale is back to ÂŁ249, so it seems that was a genuine sale after all.

My mate nasty Alex ( who looks like Jaws ) came over this evening, I handed him both my £249 rotary watch and the £34 Paulareis octopus watch, and asked him what he thought was the more expensive and he actually went for the latter!! I didn’t show him my £375 Tissot though

So this happened this afternoon. Heading to downtown Norfolk for my volunteer time at the Battleship Wisconsin Museum and streaming my driving tunes playlist. As I pulled into the parking garage, “Backseat Driver” from the TND soundtrack came through my speakers. Big ol’ smile as I pulled into a spot.

I got to spend the night on the Wisconsin a few years ago with my sons’ scout troop. Its a great ship. Thanks for all you do to keep it in shape for visitors to experience.

And I hope you have an easier time exiting the garage than Bond did.

I did, actually. I paused the track and finished it as I was leaving (with another car in “close pursuit”). Glad you enjoyed your night on WISKY!!!
