The funny thing is I took that a little bit seriously because the individual in question was completely out of left field from the usual tabloid names. Another lesson to trust nothing at all with Bond casting stories.

Was just thinking, it’s a shame for Tom Hardy that they are looking for a younger actor for Bond as he did want the role and has long term professional relationships with the writer and one of the producers. If ever he would’ve had a foot in the door…

To be honest, I always struggled with the idea of Hardy as Bond. Around INCEPTION it was a much more often mentioned option, but even then I felt DiCaprio might be closer to the part. I like Hardy very much, his Alfie Solomons in particular. But for Bond he’s probably developed just that little bit too much into gangster territory. It’s not so much that this is present - Connery being the best evidence here - but the fact it’s blotting out most other nuances.

Hardy is too much of a brute in his screen persona, never liked the idea of him as Bond. I also think his voice is too, um, high.
Of course, I would never say this to his face because he could break me like a twig with his little finger.

I’ve never viewed Tom Hardy as James Bond. He always seemed more like a henchman or villain to me.

i think it´s more a casting problem playing a lot of gangster characters…a Terence Young like director (maybe Nolan) could have made a great Bond movie with him easily. Acting chops wise it shouldn´t have been a problem for him

The Stephen knight connection is intriguing, obviously Cillian Murphy, but… there is Jack O’Connell. I enjoy him as an actor and he’s quite a chameleon.

Hardy seemed like he would just be Craig 2.0 as Bond. I always like how the actors are a bit of a different flavor between eras. For years, you couldn’t convince me otherwise that Henry Cavill was going to be Bond 7. I think he’s too old now (even though he’s only 43). Charlie Hunnam could’ve made a great Bond, but I think he’s also aged out. My money is currently on Richard Madden.

At 38 I don’t think there’s enough age difference to really matter between Madden and Cavill. That said, my only issue with Madden is that he comes across as small in stature onscreen. Though I really like him as an actor, Jack O’Connell suffers from the same stature problem. O’Connell is 5’8”, while Madden is 5’9”. Craig is 5’10” but physically comes across as much more of a bruiser to me.
I realize a director can overcome some of that with framing of shots, but again, I perceive Madden as small from having watched several of his shows/movies. But maybe that’s just me.

To me it is how they come across on the screeen (as you noted in your post). I always thought Roger Moore was relatively small (say 5’9 to 5’10 (i.e., about my height)), especially when compared to Connery and Dalton. However, he is listed a little taller than 6’1, while those two were about 6’2. It might be the scenes with Richard Kiel who is listed as taller than 7’1 that caused me to see Sir Roger that way.

Indeed, height is not the biggest problem on screen - and many actors are not tall.
However, I do think that Bond should be of a certain size, and that’s why Connery and Dalton could easily command a room.

Touche’… And that’s the whole issue right there. I like Madden and I like O’Connell, but anyone playing Bond needs to be able to instantly command a room. Perfectly said.
