Agreed. A re-recording of the music could be made to sound identical to the way it sounded in the film. It just requires a decent orchestra with access to all the necessary instruments and musicians.
Prometheus Records released a re-recording of Jerry Goldsmith’s Basic Instinct soundtrack back in 2004, performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra. I couldn’t fault it.
The problem was with the New film coming out NTTD, EON were too busy & they will not release any soundtracks when a new film is due out ( Don’t ask why but this has always been the case with any new film not just Bond) Also with the sale of MGM things stalled & this
Will only change now Amazon have brought them out, I really do not know if any new negotiations have taken place, just hoping a deal has been struck with LLL Records, I think the coming months will show if this has
happened & I am really praying it has.
Cannot tell you how excited I will be if we see more expanded scores this Autumn
Top of my list is Moonraker & LIcence to Kill (this has at least 40 minutes not released), although would really like the following John Barry albums expanded MWTGG ( about 25 minutes unreleased music), Octopussy (about 25 - 30 minutes unreleased music), AVTAK (about 16 minutes unreleased music) & Thunderball (still has about 20 - 25 minutes unreleased music) & non Barry scores TND & TSWLM & Goldeneye (about 25 minutes unreleased music)
I am a great believer that anything is possible, even though I know the 1st Three films Dr No , From Russia With Love & Goldfinger the master tapes are said to be lost but they can always lift them by other means these days.
You never know what might happen now we are in the 60th Anniversary in 2022 for me this is too good an opportunity to miss for the James Bond scores as this is the one category the music that has not been tapped apart from the fantastic expansions Lukas Kendall did in 2003 on 4 of the older scores.
Lets hope La La Land Records are looking at all these possible options for the 60th anniversary & they can get through any red tape , as it too bigger opportunity to miss, considering the last big lot of expanded Bond scores was in 2003 almost 20 years ago.
What do other Bond Music fans think on this thread of the missing James Bond Music cues & expanding them on new Double CD releases ?
I love all the extended releases thus far and do belive that the most if not all of the masters are not really “lost” but rather “misplaced”. I haven’t known of any musician or composer who didn’t keep their own personal copy of their work. According to a friend who’s worked with him, the great John Williams has his own vault in his home of everything he’s done.
Aside from this being the 60th anniversary of the films, I think we’re missing the obvious for Bond mania and fanfare is 2023. April of '23 will mark the (Double-0) 70th anniversary of the publication of Casino Royale which started all of this.
That’s the penultimate anniversary for me. Also, as mentioned above, that gives enough time and space for the powers that be and the companies that produce the physical media to really get these potential albums done. Hell, aside from CD’s, I’d love remastered vinyl editions. Vinyl outsold CD’s for the first time in nearly 30 years this last year and my own turntable has been spinning more than it has since my high school years.
Sooner would be better than later of course, but '23 would be a great time and occasion for it.
So, as to the original question of this thread: My wishlist?
Make 2023 the big year with the films in a new set and all the soundtracks complete either remastered or recreated.
In April, Eon announces the delivery date for Bond 26 and (ideally) with that who shall be entrusted with the PPK and keys to the Aston Martin.
Announcement of a new continuation author from IFP with a contemporary setting/timeline and address the modern world.
Of these, my first is the most tangible. However, with their future distribution locked in place and that with all the pandemic delays of NTTD, I have to imagine Eon has at least a bare bones outline for Bond 26 or (slim but not outlandish) possibly a very early rough draft. MGW once said he had “boxes of stunts and stories that haven’t been unpacked” and there is still plenty of material untapped from Fleming and the continuation authors to be utilized.
There isn’t any draft. Bond 26 doesn’t even have a writer. The first big announcement the public will receive about the next film is the appointment of the writer(s). Maybe it will be Neal Purvis and Robert Wade again.
Until then, the Bond 26 project is officially on LEVEL ZERO.
As for the 70th anniversary of the book, Casino Royale, I wouldn’t expect there to be much fuss made about that. I can’t recall anything substantial happening in 2013.
The marketing and merchandise for the 60th anniversary hasn’t exactly been massive. The films still haven’t been released on 4K disc! Nor will they be in the foreseeable future. You’d have thought now would be the time for MGM to do that, apparently not!
I don’t hold out much hope for us ever getting all the remaining classic Bond soundtracks in expanded form in the short to medium term either. An expanded soundtrack for the remaining David Arnold titles and the Thomas Newman ones are what I’d expect before anything else.
I wasn’t referring to the last 2-3 years, surrounding NTTD. I was saying, why haven’t the Bond soundtracks (besides DAD & TWINE) been able to be expanded and released by LLL Records or any other label years prior to that?
You absolutely do not know that Bond 26 doesn’t have writers and there isn’t work being done behind the scenes as Bryce said.
Purvis and Wade were reported to start working on the Bond 25 script on March 9, 2017 but it wasn’t until July 24, 2017 that Eon made an official announcement.
While I agree that the publication of a 70 year old book won’t garner the attention the anniversary of film series will, it is absolutely reasonable to expect something fun to mark the occasion, as was indeed done in various forms for the 60th…
I guess it’s to each his own on this one, but… we started the year with a 60th Anniversary tribute at the Academy Awards and are closing in on a celebration at Royal Albert Hall, feature-length documentary, a charity auction.
As for merchandise, the 007 Store has an entire section of 60th anniversary merchandise to choose from, with some Bond stalwarts like Floris, Lock and Co, Globe Trotter and Penfold getting in on the fun.
The problem was that EON was testing the waters with
DAD & TWINE & also had a good relationship with David
Arnold hence the reason these were released first ,I do
think more would have been released but we hit the problem of a New James Bond film & they don’t like any old soundtracks being released while a new film is due to come out, then the film release got delayed through COVID & then we had the negotiations as mentioned earlier & the sale of MGM & this has just delayed more releases, all I can hope & pray that now the sale has gone through with Amazon that this will now be picked up again with the appropriate parties & we get some more expanded scores for the 60th Anniversary of James Bond which would be really cool
Art loses value when it’s an imitation, no matter how closely it resembles the original. I’d feel the same way about this. I’d like it to be the music that appeared back in 1979, if it ever does happen.
I´d like that, too. But if it´s not possible - I dare you to compare QB-VII to the original and tell me which is which. Same goes for the Blade Runner re-recording that was done. Really great work.
Basically yes. The problem is (I don’t know if it is still handled that way), many soundtracks are already re-recordings, anyway. They’d have to pay too many fees to the original orchestra musicians, so they re-record it for the record release with much cheaper musicians (an example for this ist the TSWLM soundtrack).
David Arnold is on Twitter and is quite good at responding, he could probably tell you how those expanded releases come about and the likelihood of more.
Yes I know he is on Twitter but he will 100% not be able to answer the question of whether there will be more of his Bond Scores to be expanded soon in the autumn or any other of the James Bond scores as he would be sworn to secrecy by EON & LLL Records, there would be people in the know but again they have to keep it secret until any announcement is made, let’s just keep our fingers crossed for this autumn
