News on NO TIME TO DIE (no spoilers)

Rumors from Twitter:

We might have missed something special, if they share specifics.

Interesting. Genuinely curious to see if any of this will be salvageable. They have their work cut out for them. I hope it’ll all be worth it in the end.

Hmmm… Too cliché for all the fan wishes and speculation. Just my gut here. Too much smoke and not enough fire.

Exactly. Who actually owns that twitter account?

And even if it were true that two people loved the script - what does that tell us? I would certainly hope that everybody involved liked the ideas - instead of going along, thinking “oh, what a mess - let’s turn that into a movie”.

Oh, the times when there was no twitter for people to seek attention…

These tweets do seem to run with the (wrong) assumption that nothing from the script Hodge/Boyle worked on would be in the eventual Bond 25, when, in fact, EON seem to be looking for a writer and director to continue on that script, if they arn’t they would have immediately announced a delay.

Absolutely

It would make a nice change

Or perhaps they’ve reverted to the P&W draft

But even that would mean delay simply for the pre-production that would need redone, if that stuff all is okay Hodge can’t have done a new script or changed that much of the P&W script.

And - once again - if the Hodge draft (it must have been at least a second or third one) had been that spectacularly fantastic I doubt that EON would not have recognized that.

Also, which rumor do we want to believe? The most repeated one was that casting led to Boyle resigning, not the script.

Even if it was both - there must have been some serious problems that needed to be addressed.

And let’s assume Hodge´s work had highly interesting ideas in it… that does not mean that the script itself was too good for EON or any producing entity. I have read scripts with fantastic ideas, but the scripts itself were not good enough: bad structure, clumsy dialogue or just out of character-dialogue when it was a script for a series and the writer did not have a feeling for those particular characters.

In that case, it would have been absolutely the right choice to say: let’s bring in another writer who better knows how to write Bond.

Coming back to the casting differences: it certainly will not have been about any actor not being good enough.

The casting director will have only invited a few select great ones for Boyle and EON to review. All of them wonderful professionals. But the differences of opinion will have been based on the view on the particular character and how to play it. Also, and this is the reality of film financing, it will probably have had something to do with a certain popularity. To cast a complete unknown for the villain can work. But if the rest of the movie had not featured any famous enough actor to bolster the PR it might have become difficult.

In other words: Blofeld could have been played magnificently or even better by a bunch of unknown actors in SPECTRE. Getting Christoph Waltz, however, was a coup that ensured tons of PR and probably more ticket sales.

If it wasn’t that, maybe it was just the personal take am actor like Kot brought that led to dissent. But that happens all the time. One just has to accept and deal with it.

I agree. Boyle left while in casting so it’s most likely because of casting.

There may have been reservations about script; there may have been rumblings or anxiety about last minute ‘tweaks’ by other writers. But casting would certainly appear to be the reason/final straw.

Well, it is curious. While that news about Craig taking the lead in Knives Out need not necessarily mean BOND 25 will be delayed, it also says Craig might have a small window - a window that wouldn’t be there if everything had been going according to plan for BOND 25. So there is already a delay, albeit it’s not sure yet how big or small that is.

Then again, a Bond actor accepting a lead role, however limited, right before production on the next film is scheduled would either indicate that everything is moving very comfortably and slick in the desired direction - or not at all.

By now most commenters seem to think BOND 25 has to push back its release. And yet it’s still possible that Eon know more (and Craig, being possibly once more in the producer role, would share their knowledge), that some script is already knocked about by Boyle’s replacement and January could see BOND 25 taking off.

Let’s hope for the best.

One thing´s for sure: EON always only comments when it is absolutely unavoidable. :smirk:

It’s an indie shoot - would say to me they could probably get it done in a month or so as would be usual for a higher end indie shoot - would probably just take the time he would have been shooting Bond 25 in Nov into December. I don’t think this precludes 25 starting in mid December/after Xmas or January

The amount of times I’ve seen “Untitled DC movie 2023” announced…it makes EON’s silence a nice change from teasers for trailers.

So Variety, a highly reliable source, says EON is trying to find a suitable director BEFORE they lose their release date. Which means, they are still working to the Oct/Nov dates.

I sincerely hope they find a director soon and keep the release date, because the Bond community is already in a slumber. We need to be woken up with excitement, not pessimism and delays.

If EON is reading this, please get your act together.

No doubt they are doing everything to keep things moving. The pressure they are under is so immense weaker producers would crumble instantly.

The interesting bits from this Variety article seem to be these:

  • the Boyle/Hodge script appears to have been green lighted before the disagreement over casting made Boyle resign

So, all the talk about “EON hated the extreme quality of the script and wanted it to be watered down” is total rubbish.

  • EON did not see “White Boy Rick” because it wasn’t finished at the time, so they were interested in Demange due to his work before that!

  • the new contenders for directing are relatively newcomers: “American Animals” helmer [Bart Layton]and [S.J. Clarkson], who was recently tapped to direct the next “Star Trek” installment.

I´d love Clarkson to do it, a female director for Bond would be a fantastic way to get another perspective on Bond´s macho-side. Maybe, with the unsure Star Trek-situation, she is most likely to be free to do it.
