Oh it’s live. She isn’t lip syncing. This isn’t Russia
there was some live stuff in there (most of it) and some backing tracks (mainly her backing vocals and some synth stuff) - the strings were live, zimmer most likely played the synth bits (and triggered the trumpet sample most likely) from his midi keyboard, finneas did some backing vocals (in addition to the backing track vocals) and marr played his guitar (keeping in mind hes likely using a modeling amp etc that would exactly replicate what they used in studio)- but gone are the days of “live” renditions being hugely different to the recorded version because with tech, there’s not a huge amount of difference between the studio and stage anymore
Was a good performance and it appeared to me to be live (the vocals, at least). But maybe she’s just a great mime.
That was very good. Great to see the four of them on stage together.
Video pulled
Made me happy seeing Zimmer having fun
no, there are a few differences she’s definitely not lip syncing and you can definitely hear Finneas’ live vocals as well
I listened to it on headphones and I can assure you, it’s live. There are subtle inflections and differences not present in the studio version. @aus89 is spot on, you can really nail the sound of a studio recording when performing live.
If anyone here went to Casino Royale Live in Concert, you could similarly swear they just played the recorded score, it’s that great a performance
I can vouch for this.
Really, really weak. And the fool me once part sounds like spare parts from WOTW. Probably the most boring title track we ever had in almost 60 years, incl. NSNA…but fits perfectly into the new direction they went since SF. Just listened to K.D. Lang´s Surrender while watching the new trailer…I really like her voice. Should have had the opportunity to do a proper title song.
I’m quite tipsy watching it, but I think they knocked it out of the park
I’m usually a fussy music critic and Billie’s selection initially gave me pause. But her song won me over fairly quickly, and re-listens strengthened my opinion. I don’t usually respond well to hushed singing, that more often resembles talking. But this works for me when you consider it’s coming from a place of deep hurt for Bond. When you have that type of pain it can be hard to even talk, as it’s very introspective and personal with all sorts of thoughts rolling over in your mind.
It’s a matter of debate with icons as to how much depth they should have before their mystery is eroded. But for me, seeing the song playing over NTTD footage is what sold me for good. Especially seeing Matera Bond burning the note. I felt a strong connection to the character as a person. In my opinion that added vulnerability has been an accomplishment for this era.
Billie’s soaring statements of the title near the end has enough of the necessary power to satisfy my theatrical desires. I think this is one of the most lyrically potent Bond songs in the catalogue.
Here the siblings talk about when and how exactly they started to work on the song.
And Johnny Marr talking about his work with Zimmer on the score…
He is the element I’m most looking forward to.
Lots of guitar. Very exciting to hear that. Let’s rival/surpass Arnold’s TND score.
I get the impression they’re trying to avoid bombast as much as possible these days. If so, I understand the reasons but feel there’s definitely something lost as a result.
Well, the orchestral segments in the song do qualify for bombast - and if a composer loves and is known for bombast, it´s HANS ZIMMER. So, don’t worry.
haha yes Hans Zimmer is not exactly known for subtle and subdued… I wouldn’t worry - its more about playing to Eilish’s strengths as a writer and singer, arranging for the song is a whole other kettle of fish to the score - arranging the song is colouring in around the lines that Eilish’s song provided them - and in the song’s case they made her voice the centre of attention and built atmosphere around her, with Bondian flourishes rather than drowning her out with an orchestra blaring and competing for attention with her.
